This year's May Day Steam event in Urmston, Manchester has taken place, with the rather sad rumour that it could be the last one!
Let's hope that it is only a rumour.
We were very lucky with the weather, with heavy rain only at the end of Sunday and Monday.
The organs in attendance were:
The ex Stuart Marti-Bowler Dean (now owned by George Houghton)
Ned Kaye and his Hand turned collection
Peter Clouston's 52 key Verbeeck
George Houghton's 48 Note Pell
Dale Riley's Mortier
White's 98 Key Gavioli (Panoramic view: use the scroll bar to scroll across!)
"Right hand down a bit" One of the road rollers is moved to the arena
Watch out Ned!
The water for the engines was between Clouston's and Whites!
A great sight at this event were the number of young 'apprentices'...
Mike Charlton and his young assistant prepare his miniature steamer
"I think the problem's down there Dad"!
Even the full size engines have trainees!
George Coles engine
"Doctor doctor, I'm having problems with my bearings!"
Tony (Mr President) Harrison is back 'on the circuit' with the FOPS stall!!
Good public attendances during the weekend kept traders happy!
A good selection of small stationary engines were at the event
Wally and Kath Gould's steam powered laundry!
Two of the tractors
The Motorcycle section was well attended
The Model Marquee has an excellent selection on display
A novel steam car in the construction stage
The steam car will be powered by this steam yacht engine (with modifications!)
The Urmston & District Model Engineering Society (Ltd) have a miniature railway track extending all around the Chasson Road Playing Field and operates on Sundays throughout the year
The miniature trains carry passengers around the park
The car section
A panoramic view of the event, near Whites
Here's hoping for more May Day Steam events!

Thanks Dave for the excellent pictures of a very enjoyable weekend.
All these type of shows are suffering from a lack of interest by the younger generation to get involved with the work required to stage them.
Hopefully it is a good sign to see youngsters interested in the Steam Engines.
Regards

Hi Dave.
Just noticed on the last of the May Day Steam pics (the panoramic view) that the Junior Chairman appears at the begining and the end of the picture.
Has he got a Double?
Regards

Hi George.
I was wondering when someone would notice that our 'Junior Chairman' AKA Robert appears twice in the panoramic view. I was just testing how observant everyone was!
Its because the panorama is made from a series of stills and Robert had moved, so he appeared in two pictures!
It was reassuring to see the young 'apprentices' helping on the steamers, we can only hope that there are enough young members to continue with the essential work of preservation.
That applies in the organ world also.
Regards,
Dave |
